UNESCO has expressed thanks to the Republic of Congo for its emergency contribution after the U. S. cut of support in response to the agency's recognition of Palestine.
UNESCO representative in the Central African county Abdouramane Diallo on Monday voiced gratitude to the government and people of the Republic of Congo for the timely support to the agency.
Recently, the Congolese government made a contribution of 3 million U. S. dollars to enable the UN agency to offset a budgetary deficit following the suspension of funding by the United States.
The top leadership of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has created a kitty to resolve the financial crisis that the organization is currently going through.
Diallo expressed his organization's appreciations to Speaker of the Congolese Parliament Justin Koumba.
"We sincerely thank the Congolese people and government, through the parliamentary Speaker and members of parliament, for this generous gesture. This is a sign of strong solidarity that Congo has expressed towards the international community," he said.
The U.S. government announced the suspension of its usual financial contribution of 22 percent of UNESCO's budget after the admission of Palestine into this UN agency during the 36th general conference held in November in Paris. |
