Zhejiang Provincial Museum
Located on the Solitary Hill Road in the West Lake District, Zhejiang Museum is a comprehensive museum of liberal arts housing mainly historical relics. It was built at the site of the West Lake World Fair held in November 1929. After the expansion in 1992, it has now become a large museum in China. There are several exhibition halls, namely those of History of Zhejiang, Celadonware, coins and banknotes, handicrafts, calligraphic works and paintings in addition to Wenlan Ge, used to be an ancient library that has become a temporary exhibition hall. In the museum, various kinds of exhibitions are held regularly. The museum is characterized by its collection of the cultural relics of the New Stone Age and the celadonware of different dynasties. The remains of rice, bone spade-shaped farm tools, weaving implements, lacquer bowls of the New Stone Age are on display in the museum, which are rarely to be seen elsewhere. Among the collection of paintings, most precious are the incomplete painting of 揇welling in the Hills of Fuchun by Huang Gongwang (1269-1354), famous painter of the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368). This artwork is known both at home and abroad. Besides, the museum also boasts of a large collection of modern paintings by famous painters like Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) and Huang Binhong (1865-1955), and among them, there are 1000-odd paintings by Huang Binhong. The museum is also rich is the cultural relics of the Taiping Revolutionary period in Mid-19th century. Latest collections include books and paintings donated by Xia Yan (1900-1995), famous playwright of modern China and the sward used by Gou Jian (?-465BC), King of the State of Yue, one of the Warring States during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Period of Warring States (770-221 BC). The recovery of the sward has produced great sensations both at home and abroad.
